Rising fourth graders investigated needs related to kindergarten readiness for children in their community based on information they learned about child development.
They began by observing kids in a local preschool classroom to discover what skill they wanted to focus on for their project. Students chose to help the preschoolers learn how to take turns by creating and teaching their own lesson plans that incorporated a strategy to practice turn-taking.
After, they reflected on their progress by answering questions such as, “What did you learn that you didn’t know before?” and “What were you most proud of with your lesson?” Pictures of students’ lesson plans received positive feedback on social media and a copy of students’ evaluation detailing their work was shared with next year’s teacher.
