Project: Performing Arts within the community
Health Topics
Physical Activity, Mental Health, Self expression
Specific Health Community Problem
There are not enough art programs/performing art opportunities for students at Essex Tech.
Guided Discovery
I currently teach a dance elective class to seniors and also work with an Integration Academy through our school. The students really love being a part of these opportunities but we realized as a community there is not enough. The students wanted to find a way for their peers to feel safe and express themselves with like minded individuals. The talent show brought these creative thinkers together while showcasing their skills to members of the community as well.
Investigation/Research
Students researched data and stats about the positive long term mental health effects on the power of creativity, movement and the arts through the following sites: YRBS, CDC website, Frontiers in Physiology, and Harvard studies.

Solution
Put on a school wide talent show – over 40 students performed – student run and driven ideas and performances – 250 tickets sold – gives students the opportunity to showcase their talents in a place where they can feel safe and appreciated – encourage students in the future to express themselves creatively
Community Impacts
The students were able to advertise and promote the event around their local community. They posted flyers within their shops, ymcas, places of work and libraries to get the word out.
