During September 2011, high school students identified the need for healthy, locally grown produce that could be donated to local food pantry’s to feed the less fortunate. In addition, the issues of food insecurity were addressed with respect to the local community.
Students planted a garden and harvested produce to donate. They continue to weigh and maintain a log of donated produce. Students worked on an awareness campaign for food insecurity and a public relations program to educate the community.
Community partners included Our Father’s House and Cleghorne Community Center, both in Fitchburg, MA; PACH, a food pantry in Pepperell, MA; and TEO, a food pantry that serves Townsend and Ashby, MA.
Students worked on a public relations campaign to educate the community about hunger. In addition, the simple fact of planting, watering, caring for, and harvesting the produce was a demonstration of their learning.
