The Sophomore Team at Lake Region High School adopted a trail as their year-long service-learning project. Working with their local Lakes Environmental Association, who asked for their assistance in maintaining and improving the trail, the team prepared their plan.
Between their initial work and their return in the spring, they discovered the trail and surrounding forest was the site of a logging operation. The students initiated cleanup work to rebuild the trail.
In addition, students produced tree identification books, performed plot studies, and led groups on a “trail day” to share their efforts with the school community.
Team members have witnessed several local schools discovering the trail and they hope it will be used by the community for years to come.
