Specific Health Community Problem

Improving a trail on school property

Guided Discovery

Through reading about the benefits of trails, walking the actual trail, and meeting with the community partner.

Investigation/Research

While walking the trail, students discovered the limitations of the trail. As a class, we brainstormed the problem and possible needs of the trail, along with possible solutions to help improve physical and mental health.

Lesson Plan with YRBS Data

Using Google Slides, students will be presented with 10 questions from YRBS data. The teacher will ask follow up questions then reveal the percentage, which will lead to other follow up questions such as how accurate do you think that stat is? Why might it be off, etc. Following the ten points the teacher will then link the importance of good physical and mental health with the outdoors and utilizing trails in particular.

Solution

Students were able to improve the walking path by replacing a walking bridge.

Community Impacts

The trail is now more accessible to community members.
